Overview

The South Korean central government has demonstrated interest in more environmentally friendly fuels for use in its transportation, commercial/industrial and electric utility sectors to reduce ozone and particulate pollution in its urban areas. In particular, it has immediate interest in cleaner diesel and biodiesel fuels in its transportation and commercial/industrial sectors. Regulations will focus on the simultaneous benefits of reducing both NOx and PM emissions from diesel engines, because of the dual problems of ozone and particulate pollution in South Korea's urban areas.

Initial FOE Emissions Screening

As a basis for a certification of FOE fuels for use in Korean industrial applications, initial FOE emission screening was performed at the Korean Institute of Petroleum Quality (KIPEQ) in early Nov 2008. The screening was based on determining evaluating a specific range of water contents. Testing showed that:

  • Operations with FOE fuels in the KIPEQ boiler facility proceeded flawlessly with no detrimental consequences for the boiler plant and associated instrumentation;

  • FOE fuels proved to be stable, without any significant operations devoted to preserving fuel stability; and

  • FOE fuels proved to be quite effective in decreasing gaseous (CO2, NOx, SOx) and PM emissions.
